On November 1st 2019, Buma/Stemra and Sena started with MESLIS (Music-Event-System-Location-Ident-System) of deecoob Technology to maximize market coverage in the Dutch events sector. MESLIS is a cloud based IT-solution, an innovative self-learning system to automatically map events, locations, organizers, artists and setlists.
The income from royalties on live music forms an important part of the total turnover of Buma/Stemra. Last year the income increased by more than 3 million euro to almost 34 million euro. Buma/Stemra pays this amount to the writers and music publishers of the performed songs. In 2019 the organisation processed more than 85,000 performances and 40,000 events.
The organisers are not always aware that a percentage of the receipts is intended for authors, publishers, artists and music companies. By using MESLIS, which automatically learns which events and festivals are relevant for Buma/Stemra and Sena, the licensing department can quickly contact the right parties. This prevents surprises for the organizers.
Hannah de Maat, Licensing Events Manager at Buma/Stemra: “It is fantastic to see that the Dutch live sector is still growing. That is why it is important to better map out which events are organised where and to work closely with the various organisations. All this in the interest of our members, who are responsible for the songs that are performed on stage”.
Chantal Rooke, Manager Licenses at Sena: “It is very valuable that by working with deecoob Technology and Buma/Stemra we get a better insight into the event sector and our market coverage. We are thus able to optimise our licensing in an efficient way with the primary aim of ensuring that our rightholders receive the remuneration to which they are entitled when their repertoire is used”.
Matthias Friedrich, Managing Director at deecoob Technology: “MESLIS offers forward-looking technology for web crawling, web content extraction, text mining and automated data processing. The software is specifically tailored to the needs of all collecting societies worldwide. After matching MESLIS data with data from Buma/Stemra and Sena, the WebApp offers many more possibilities in addition to the already known events. There is a good potential for extra income for our customer”.
